THE NOTICING PRACTICE

Workshop Downloads & UDL Resources

Every strong piece of writing starts with something you notice (or noticed or a noticing?).

Before we ask writers to analyze a theme, build a scene, or draft an argument, we have to give them space to look closely.

The Noticing Practice is designed around a simple, liberating principle: separate the thinking from the pressure of output.

Step 1: See (Notice what is literally there?)

Step 2: Feel (What does it stir, emotionally or physically?)

Step 3: Connect (What does it remind you of?)

And the only rule at the start: ONE WORD ONLY.

By anchoring thought in single words, ideas take root fast, and authentic inquiry follows naturally.

I put together a clean, printable 3-page organizer kit (See-Feel-Connect, Character Inside/Outside, and Setting Camera) that you can use with any lesson.
